THE LEGEND OF ASHWATHAMA

THE LEGEND OF ASHWATHAMA

Not many are unaware of the legend of Mahabharata. But individuals like Arjun, Krishna and Duryodhan have taken much of the prehistoric limelight. A character that played a pivotal role in shaping the end of Mahabharata was Ashwathama. Ashwathama was the Son of Krupi (Mother) and Dronacharya(Father), the great teacher who taught archery and weaponry to all Pandavas (remember the forgotten Hero Eklavya?) and Kaurvas. Ashwathama fought in the epic battle of Mahabharata as the commander of the forces from the camp of Kauravas (the antagonists) against the Pandavas (the protagonists), as did his father, Dronacharya. Quite an intriguing fact about Ashwathama is that since his birth, Ashwathama had a jewel (mani) embedded in his forehead which saved him from demons, Gods, snakes and from worldly botheration of hunger and thirst. So here goes the legend of Ashwathama
Towards the end of the battle when Duryodhan was killed by Bheema, the left over Kaurav warriors (including Ashwathama) made a treacherous attempt to kill Pandava brothers. They hideously attacked Pandava’s cantonment at night and beheaded the five warriors sleeping in one of the kiosks. Hours later on Sunrise, they realised they have instead of 5 Pandava brothers they killed the 5 sons of Pandavas. Naturally, Pandavas also discovered 5 headless bodies and strode in agony and anger towards the rival camp (accompanied by ‘mortal-Lord’ Krishna, the Friend-Philosopher-Guide and charioteer of Arjuna).

Seeing the extent of approaching Pandava’s fury, Ashwatthama realised the extent of his mistake and feared his life (though he was immortal!). In his dread, Ashwathama used a blade of grass and using his knowledge of Vedas, made the deadly weapon called Brahmastra (erstwhile version of Nuclear Weapon conferred to supreme warriors by Lord Brahma). He threw this weapon at Pandavas articulating the curse “May all the Pandavas be Destroyed”. To counter this weapon and its curse, Arjun withdrew his bow and released another deadly weapon called Pashupatiastra (another version of Nuclear Weapon, named after and conferred by Lord Shiva).
Now both these weapons had apocalyptic capacities. So seeing the potential danger to Mankind, Lord Vishnu (The most supreme God) descended from heavens and commanded both the warriors to withdraw or take back their weapons. While Arjun took the Pashupatiastra back, Ashwatthama din’t know how to do so. Vishnu then asked Ashwathama to decide a single target of this weapon. Still under wrath and binded by His promise to deceased Duryodhana, Ashwathama chose the womb of the pregnant ‘Uttara’ (wife of martyr Abhimanyu- the great archer and son of Arjuna) in sense that on her delivery she will have a dead child and Pandavas will be destroyed.
As a penitence for Ashwatthama, Lord Krishna pulled out his forehead’s jewel and commanded that he will not lose his immortality and will roam around till the end of the world. And worst of all, the hollow made on his forehead by digging the jewel out will never heal and will always seep blood and Puss, thus arousing a foul smell.
So months later Uttara did begot a male child who was dead. This brought a wave of Sadness to Pandav Kingdom as they were left without an heir to their prodigal dynasty. Seeing the sentiment, Lord Krishna took the child in his lap and said something close to this “If I have never favoured the evil, If I have never lied and have never did a deed, but towards just and truth, MAY THE CHILD COME TO LIFE” and as expected, the hitherto dead boy started crying. The buy was nomenclatured on this incident. His name was ‘Parikshit’ (The Tested: through a test of God) and he ruled the Pandav Dynasty after the 5 brothers left for heaven.

So coming back to Ashwatthama, his blessing of immortality turned into a curse and he joined the league of Chiranjeevis (The timeless or extremely long live, but not necessarily immortals-other examples are Hanumana, Narada and Parshurama). Since then Ashwatthama is roaming around on earth with a bleeding forehead.
Now comes the most incredible part, Ashwatthama is claimed to be seen by some people. Here are the two instances:
a) A renowned Vaidhya (Ayurvedic Doctor) in Madhya Pradesh had a tough patient with a septic forehead. After several applications of a fail-proof potion, the wound was still afresh and bleeding. Amazed at his potions inability, the doctor wittingly said: “Your forehead’s wound seems ageless and cureless. I wonder, are you Ashwatthama.. hahaha”. At the third ha, he turned around to apply the next doze and found that the seat was empty. The patient just disappeared into thin air, sealing Vaidya’s wit with reality”
b) Legend says that in an Indian village near Burhanpur, there is an old dilapidated fort called Asirgarh,, ancient tomb in India where Ashwathama supposedly offers flowers to a Shiva-ling (pneumonic of Lord Shiva) each day.
While incidence a) was reported in Kalyan Magazine, incident b) was briefly on News channels too. Some yogis like Pilot Baba have gone as far in mentioning their encounter and conversation with Ashwathama, who was living among tribes of Bheels at Himalayan Foothills. In all such incidences, the narrators mentioned the height of Ashwathama around 12 feet.
Even if you don’t believe in mythology and religion, the idea of a 12 feet tall, 6000 year old man, witnessing history’s biggest bloodshed and living with God, is still intriguing. I really wonder, if there is a real Ashwathama or any other Chiranjeevi, can’t he come to public eye and narrate us the magnanimous battle-story of our past or is Ashwathama purely legendary?

Mesmerised!

  1. as regards the height is considered ,according to Hindu mythology the height of man was in ratio of 21,14,7,4 hands .one hand is equal to length from tip of middle finger to the elbow and relates to each YUGA.(you can fold your both hands and verify it).SO its not very surprising to have a man of height 12 feet.(if ashwathama is from last yuga then he can be 12 feet long)....AS PER HINDU MYTHOLOGY....

    1. As for the legend of Aswatthama, it is likely the Mahabharata age was one where possibly people had devised ways of living long. However, the war possibly took away all of that and a lot of great warriors died taking away with them a lot of "Siddhis" or "Ancient Arcane Arts". Also Aswatthama had fired the Brahmashira astra and not the Brahmastra as thought. Arjuna possibly fired another Brahmashira astra to coutneract and amny other accounts the Pashupata. However, there can be conjectures about this. The warriors of that age knew many deadly weapons that were used to devastating effect:
      1. Arjuna - Pashupata astra, Brahmastra and Brahmashira astra
      2. Drona - all of the above and the Brahmadanda astra
      3. Karna - Brahmastra, Nagastra, Shakti astra and in some accounts the Vaishnava astra
      4. Aswatthama - He has the Narayana astra in his arsenal besides other things
      5. Bheeshma - possibly everything and the deadly Prashwapa astra
      and so on

Such deadly use caused wide scale damage and possible changed the world as we know it...

Whether Aswatthama is alive or dead cannot be ascertained because as per some accounts he migrated to the Arabian peninsula (read present day Saudi Arabia) and some others tell he had two descendants. From one came the dynasty called the Pallavas named after his son Pallav and from the other came Hussaini Dutt Brahmins who fought as "Daar-e-Hindiya" for the last son of Mohammed and got martyred...

Who knows the history? We cannot speculate... Because usually Victors write the history. Many accounts tell of Duryodhana's youngest son having survived and some other descendants and migrating to Kathiawad - Gujarat, India, Arabia, Sri Lanka (read Karavas), Gandhaar in Afghanistan and possibly in Himachal and Uttarkhand......

Well these would always be riddles hidden in time!!

  2. Thanks for the post dude! my grandfather once told me a real story of his young age...."person with height 12ft came into their village and quitely entered the village eatery. He ate 30 Samosas, about 50 rasgullas and one pot of rice, he also drank about 8 buckets of water from the well. When the eatery guys asked him for monies, he disappered. People who saw him eating said he was bleeding continiously from his forehead. After he went there was a gathering in the village and everyone was convinced that he was ashwadhama. But since that day the eatery guy's business began to florish. Today he owns a 4* hotel in Noida and 8 restaurants in Delhi, that guy feeds the needy for free every Sunday with a wish of seeking Ashwadhama's darshan once again.

  6. Hi Sunandha
Believing this story becomes a religious disposition so I won't take that up. And about Ashwatthama's mortality, the point is he is only aged, not old. The blessing, followed by cursing, ensured his youth and immortality, yet took away his unearthly power reservoir. After submitting this blog, I further researched on this and found the incidences (fact or fiction) of his existence are enough. And I agree with you he was quite an antagonist.
Nevertheless, the concept still intrigues me.

  7. Hi Abhishek
Aswattama is one of the character I like in the story of Mahabharath.

Any way he was not used efficiently and effectively.

Anyone can say it was the decision by the god, but I use to say it was politics

Even up to Now I can see there were & are somany efficient and effective people like Aswattama being ignored by the human society

  11. Your blog is controversial yet rational, somewhat similar to Zeitgeist interpretation of God & religion. I am not favouring Trojan Horse's immortality or even creation, yet the thought fascinates me. But if you are claiming he traveled the oceans, learned new languages, won more wars and was just a mortal (who lived till 60, nay be 70), you might have many mouths to shut!
It was really an interesting read though!

  17. Hi Friends,

Let me highlight some other fact which anyone one of you might have not though of. In the end of Kaliyuga Kalki Avatar will come on earth to reestablish Dharma and for that he would need a force (A force of MEN) . When this Kalki Avtar will come his GURU will be Parshurama . Now what I believe all other Immortals have thier duty to perform and ofcourse they are waiting for the right time to show up so is Ashwathama. Now Ashwathama was being cursed by Lord Krishna this can be justified with an example of Bheeshma. Bheeshma was one of the Vasus who was being Cursed by some rishi which forced him to take a Birth of earth and pay for his sins. Now may be Ashwathama has a past which we obviously dont know and by the end of this Kaliyuga he must have paid for his Sins and he will be a part of the Lord Kalki's army. If you see all those immortals are great warriors except Ved Vyasa (who will again witness the scene like he did in MahaBharata and Vibheshana who I don't what he is gonna do LOL ) . But the fact is that these immortals are here for nothing they have a purpose to fulfill. Now does anybody know who Ahswathama was in his previous life? Please comment if you know so

    Hi!
Sorry for the late reply. My job kept the best of me all this while!

About proof, I've collated the information for this blogpost from a kashi pundits, some keen travelers, an aghori saadhu and some Hindu scholars in University of Patna (flanked with some web research and my own knowledge of Mahabharata). Not that I researched specifically for this, but I merely collated what I learned over the years empirically.

About marriage, Mahabharata does not says anything about Ashwathama's marriage, so I presume he died a bachelor as his age was quite less at the time of his death, if we do the temporal calculations.
However, I am keen to know what have you heard about Ashwathama. Please share.

    Hey!
No probs about the late reply, I was kinda curious. What I know is what my aunt and dadi have told me - Ashwathama is not alive right now and Lord Krishna did curse him that he won't be loved by anyone but that is a lil bit wrong, Ashwathama did not get the love of a wife/girlfriend/lover but he had the love of everyone else. I can't share all the details here, am sorry :(

I tried looking up University of Patna but couldn't get anything. Will you be able to share website of UofP or the people with whom you spoke at that University? I mean if its no problem to you. I haven't read the Mahabharat myself and the only books I came across on Amazon are the comic version which I am not interested in. So, if you will be able to provide me with any details it will be great. I am hmmm, lets say I am curious to know what others know about Ashwathama :)

But, in India, religion suffers no barriers of advertisement, it has to be self attained and achieved. It is an experience which never needs to sell as its qualities itself attract one and all.

So here is the clear justification for your so called Caste system as per MANU SATSRA:

The great Ruler Manu Deva explained the Caste system like this... Rather than birth of Individual the Character and way of life of a person determines what caste he belongs so some one who thinks good and high always stays high and some one who thinks low and stoops low always is ranked lower. The system dint propagate right in the past 1 Century due to corrupt politicians and illegitimate rulers...

I am sure u are fine with the reason as you experience the worst political system in the world, unfortunately you/American Political beasts disturb every human on the earth by many means like Military Aid for Pakistan (5bn $ a year... Its estimated more tan 80% of it goes into terrorists hands), America started a character called Bin Laden (Who was a well learned Engineer actually), America over threw Saddam and caused unrest in the middle east and supplied arms to rebels which ended in hands of ISIS oh the list is too big my Finer aches to type...

To talk India never Invaded any country in the past 500 Years unless provoked or attacked.... Now speak of Great America just list out the number of countries America Poked at... Starting with Russia, Cuba, Vietnam, Germany, Mexico, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Syria hell if you map up only few countries on globe will be left.....

So friend lets respect each other and don't talk less on each other if you talk of Caste System god there are worse things in US than caste system is your Racism not the same?

We believe in our great heritage and culture and Love everyone.... My grandfather's Guruji had seen Ashwathama. It was a long time ago while my grandfather's guruji was in army. He and his friend had to work as a guard in Hindu cemetery but everybody were scared to do the duty over there because of paranormal activity. My grandpa's guruji said "I will go there and stand up as guard" He stayed there whole night. He heard alot of scary noice in cemetery but he stood up. After a while Ashwathama showed up and he said, "I am amazed from your bravery" and he gave him 2 things(Kamdhenu ma(idol cow)) and second one I don't know. Kamdehnu ma is cow and u can ask anything you desire. Actually my uncle who is Doctor in Anand,Gujarat has seen that cow in idol when my guruji and some other devotee went to Kashi and ran out of money. That time my guruji has shown the idol cow and asked for money but in return he told every devotees to payback the money when you reach your home. Because Guruji believed that if you take something that is not ur than u should return it to right space. So guys Ashwathama story is true.

  36. @ Abhishek - Good effort at putting together pieces of history, facts and religious fiction. Although i have complete faith n confidence in our culture, religion and history; i am sometimes pained to see people taking advantage of it to glorify their stories. One account of ecounters with Ashwathama that i've read is that he is found lurking around various religious temples and especially around narmada and ganga, where he is either asking for butter (no the pasteurized one) or some oil to apply on his wounds. Now there is surely a mention of a old and tall person but not to such a gigantic extent. Moreover people hardly have a glimpse of him and thats it! Would really like to have some concrete stuff on this! Keep up the good work!

    4. Basically Ashvathama was the son of Dronacharya-guru of pandavas and kauravas. Drona was a real talented man as a result of his skills he was blessed and thus got ashvathama as a gift from gods.
Asvathama by his birth possesed a mani which gave him power. He became immortal as boon from his father becoz of extraordinary valiance....

      Delete
    5. You are right. Ashwathama is not immortal. He only has high longevity. So is Bali-Vyasa-Hanuman-Kripa-Parusharama. They will stay on earth till the Manvantara.

      Delete
    6. Actually Aswatthama is also believed to be one of the 11 rudramadevi. Therefore he is an incarnation of Lord shiva. But now the question arises that if he is a God then how can he do something that nasty. I have read it in another post that this form of incarnation was taken to set an example for humans. So that they should learn to take control of their deeds.

      Delete
    7. Sorry it will be rudras and not rudramadevi

    1. WHAT MY STUDIES SAY HE WAS ENCOUNTERED IN THE JUNGLES NEAR TO HARIDWAR AND RISHIKESH. ASWATHAMA WAS CURSED BY KRISHAN JI AND WAS TOLD THAT HE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ENTER HUMAN CIVILIZATION AND EVEN CAN'T SHARE HIS EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS.
I THINK WE NEED TO EXPLORE THIS.

2.THIS BLOG IS STILL HAVE A CONTRADICT THAT VISHNU DIDNT CAME WHEN ASWATHAMA AND ARJUNA FIRED BHRAMASTRA. RISHI VYAS PREVENTED COLLISION OF BOTH B-ASTRA AND TOLD TO CALL BACK THEIR ARROWS.

  49. Hello Abhishek, nice write up!!
There is one point on which different sources seem to contradict. In the version I have heard, apparently Veda Vyasa himself uses his powers to prevent the Brahmastra from colliding. Subsequently Krishna instructs Arjuna and Ashwathama to withdraw their astras.
From what you mention above, Sri Vishnu himself descends and holds the astras apart. Not sure which one is true.

    1. @Anonymous

As per order of Lord Krishna to call back the BRAHMASHTRA, Arjuna had did the the same while Ashwatthama had didn't to took a revenge of Duroyadhan Vadh and fired the BRAHMASHTRA. To save the life of unborn child Lord Krishna/Vishnu did the protection as written earlier.

I hope this will be helpful to you to know the missing channel.

I personally know someone who claims to be a reincarnation of Draupadi and that person has described to me accurate facts about Mahabharata and many things too that are not recorded in the Mahabharata.. The fact about Ashwasthama in day time remains a mystery as no one knows as to where he lives. But in the night time, it is said he vists the karmabhoomi of Kurukshetra and repentance of his acts make him visit the Shiv temple in Asirgarh near Burhanpur because the shiv temple here actually has heavenly powers.. I am a native of Burhanpur and I have done extensive research on mahabharata.. Anyone wishing to know more.. please feel free to contact me.

    3. Reading this blog first time.

It is said that once you see the lord, you get eligible to attain moksha(free from cycle of birth and deaths) whether you are good or bad. So I assume, each and everyone who had the fabulous opportunity to see Lord Krishna (The One) in his true self has already attained moksha. Especially a character like Draupadi who lord Krishna gave the status of his sister. So I don't agree that she can get re-incarnated.

According to Mahabharat, Krishna visit to kurukshetra on every solar eclipse, to take bath in sacred tank of bharma sarovara and ashwathama also comes to find krishna so that krishna will grant him mercy. Many Sadhus and common people saw him on solar eclipse at kurukshetra.

  54. it could be true. Dwaraka remains have been found. it raises as many questions as it answers. I'm sure over thousands of years the actual story is distorted and so much of it is symbolic than literal. but why would he go to doctor when he was cursed by Lord Krishna himself? though it is intriguing. the ancients had powerful knowledge if Ashwatthama is indeed alive, and surely repenting, he would not want the ancient secrets pestered out of him. we are destructive enough the ancient knowledge of Brahmastra and other warfare better be left alone and locked in the heads of Ashwatthama and other Chiranjeevis if there are still here.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I personally feel that he is equivalent to almighty .... I mean he is THE ONE on Earth ... He can do whatever he want , but not against his curse ... i feel very sad for him because he has ability to travel anywhere in world ... and so , to pass 5000+ years of earth , the whole earth is a very small place ... it's just like asking a normal man to spend a year in a toilet seat ... i mean what poor sentiments do this great warrior have ... plus wandering around in this small world ( not small for a common man becoz a world is big enoungh pass 70 or 80 year , but to pass 5000 !Oh my god ) with a big wound , with flies around it ... I mean just think of his pain ... and Lord Krishna had cursed him to live till the end of the world ... so he has to pass more 50000000 years ... ( the sun will last for 50000000 more year .... and with it , the earth will also destroy ) ... If i could ever see Lord Krishna ... I would surly ask him to forgive This Hero ....
    thanks ...

I'm an italian student. I rode first time a little version of Mahabharata when I was a child; after I rode other prose version of this poem, I like so much this one. But only two years ago I noticed the Aswatthama's importance and I feel compassion for him. Now I writing my thesis for the university and I want make a review and a comparison about Aswatthama and Karna, because I think their vicissitudes are most interessing, they are tormented heroes and their suffering rehearse their grandeur.
I would meet Aswatthama, but I know this will be possible only if he will that.

  60. Interesting & Intriguing.

Wow!! First of all Kudos to Abhishek.
All right, now I think we have discussed enough of what Mahabharat by BR Chopra and related blogs and the book has to say about "Ashwathama" and everything triggers down to one thing that "he was allegedly cursed by Lord Krishna to roam the planet till the end of the earth, with that ever fresh wound on his forehead" Period !!!! No records depicts anything beyond this.

    Now, lets talk about the so called encounters of this immortal figure with the mankind;
    1. As mentioned in intoduction post, Some Vadya Claims that Ashwathama Visited him to get his wound fixed. Crap !!!! ( Can't be considered at all, though the news was on some magazine)A 6000 year old man can do better then that.

Well, other then the above mentioned encounter, rest all (barring few others) the alleged encounters have been made either in the woods near "Omkareshwar" 90KM from Indore, (MP) or at the fort near Bhuranpur, again its near Indore.

I spent all my wild (Graduation) days in Indore and happened to explore the outskirts like crazy, though I have never been lucky enough to encounter "THE MAN" but came across more then a dozen nut cases who claims to have Hobnobbed with the man and on the contrary, I came across a very popular legend in the same area, "Ashwathama Roams in the vicinity of Omkareshwar & Bhurhanpur and who so ever sees him, looses his mental balance"

Too good to be true is all I can say but that's me!
Only, the man himself can approve or disapprove of all the legends and alleged encounters, that too if at ll he exists.

So, all said and done, we can not possibly do anything but to waste our time on blog writing( sorry Abhishek, for my choice of words, I have a sense of respect for u dude, no pun intended here). Instead, lets meet up, cross our fingers and hope to find "THE MAN"!

I am sure that all of us on this blog shares at least one common interest if nothing else, that is not so bad to jhelofy total strangers for a week or so.

We might or might not end up raising drinks with Ashwatthama but for sure its always good to make new friends and have a break from work.

    So what say guys??
If interested, please mail me on varunsingh05@hotmail.com

I might not be available on this post.
    Thanx

    1. Well put Varun. Your point taken. I'm living in Southern India now. But visit to Burhanpur is a big nagging to-do on my list. I will keep this in mind and will remember to write to you (and some more people on this thread) when I plan my week/fortnight in the place. I did by the way enquire about it. You need to have contacts and grease some palms of authorities and priests for an exclusive access to the temple (farther than Zee news went). The guy who told me this also told me that only 3 people he knows in that area are mentally unstable. But whether they were mentally unstable vagabonds who ended up being around the temple complex or was it the temple/the darshan that did it to them, remains very layered and ambiguous. I am not active on this thread myself, but am doing my research / working up the bureaucracy. Should be visiting the temple in second half of 2016.

    3. great idea...make sure you record enough footage of the adventure trip, interviews, etc. although am certain seeing the warrior (who was almost as great an archer as the greatest Arjuna) would be next to impossible. as for the 12 feet height angle, I am not surprised at all because I learnt from my visit to Bhojpur Shiva temple near Bhopal that humans during the Mahabharata era were indeed very tall - the size & height of the lingam validating this.

  62. Hero Eklavya: While the story of Eklavya is moving, his inner chetana was not pure. He was a Hari-dveshi (i.e., hater of Lord's qualities) and not a Hari Bhakta. Guru Drona was aware of his inner nature and did the act. MahaBharata records Eklavya of having attacked Lord Krishna 13 times during the war with the intent of killing him. This fact is not known as few scholars are remaining in India who can read the Sanskrit version.

  70. Hi Everyone...
I came across this blog while Googling on AshwatDhama. Abhishek- indeed a Great Job by you...hats off for starting this great never ending discussion. Its interesting to know that soo many people have interest in this Mortal Mahabharata Character. The presence of AshwatDhama cannot be ignored as he has been an important part of Mahabharata. I recently came across this interesting video done by Zee News on AshwatDhama...which was also posted on Youtube.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nASdVsHLT6M&feature=youtu.be

This reveals his presence in these 2 temples in Uttar Pradesh (India). This Video was soo inspiring that I started searching more on AshwatDhama over the net.In connection to the going Invisible / Vanishing in the air of AshwatDhama would like to tell you that we are discussing a person of the Mahabharata Clan, Son of the Great Guru Drona Charya and a person of Calibre who had all the major Vidyas and Siddhis with Nuclear Weapons (Astras-Shastras) of those times...Think how much powerful he would have been. So going invisible is not a big trait for a person like AshwatDhama.

I suggest if we really want to keep a track on his trails, we should start an exclusive blog on AshwatDhama to Share and Connect our various experiences. If by chance he is discovered,it would be the biggest discoveries of mankind till date on Earth. Lets hope for the Best and Keep exploring this search ...

    Do stay Connected.....

  75. Nostradamus in his codes predicts 92 Years of peace between the Second World War and the third world war. Hence we arrive at the Year 2037 which ushers in catastrophic changes. The comet ( Jan 2037) and asteroid ( June 2040) according to the Book of Revelations would destroy one third of the land and one third of the sea respectively submerging countries like Britain, Japan, South Africa, Singapore, parts of USA ( San Francisco) and ancient civilizations. After the 3 1/2 Years of peace war will breakout in 2041. India will be occupied by China. China and Russia will annex and occupy USA. Europe will be devastated by the Islamic invaders lead by the Mahdi of Greater Arabia who sports a blue turban launching nuclear weapons on it. The war would see 200 million soldiers kill 3 billion people. Read www.war2037.com for Hindu prophecies which mentions Kalki (Sree Veerabhoga Vasantharaya born in 1965-66 ) will restore law and order and usher in 1000 Years of peace from 2064 onwards.

  76. Some nice comments on Pandavas here, thanks for sharing. One cannot stop thinking about Draupadi while discussing Mahabharata or Pandavas. She is considered to be 'Kula Devata' and/ or 'Grama Devatha' by many people.

In fact, there are many shrines for Goddess Draupadi, spread in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. One of the shrines, where She is a Grama-Devatha and Kula-Devatha to many, is located in one of the small villages of Tamil Nadu.

If you got time, patience and willingness to know about 'Draupadi', you can visit my blog and comment.

The village is named KONDAL, Mayiladuthurai Taluk, Nagapattinam District, Nidur P.O, Tamil Nadu.

  81. Similar story I read in Navbharat Times annual issue (in mid 1980s). A man like Ashwatthama was seen around Mansarovar lake in Tibet as per a local shepherd. He was described to be very tall, well-built but with a festering wound on his forehead that gave extremely foul smell. This curious shepherd followed him but that man (Ashwatthama??) turned towards him, the smell forced the shepherd to step back, there after Ashwatthama (?) jumped into the lake and vanished.

  82. It’s absolutely amazing how much specualtion relentlessly revolves around the continuous manifestations of my miserable condition. Modern medical science has somewhat recently discovered that all the cells in all these gross material bodies, including mine, that we, the embodied (incarcerated) living entities (also known as spirit souls) dwell in, die within every 7 year period of time and are then replaced with new ones. Although the present body we reside in has existed no longer than 7 years, we consciously recollect existing and experiencing cosciousness longer, therefore “aham brahmasmi,” I am not this body, but rather an embodied being composed of spirit, not matter, comprised of five gross material elements (earth, water, fire, air and ether) and three subtle material elements (mind, intelligence and false ego). The cycle of reincarnation, carrying the subtle body and soul, currently occuring, continues after the cell replacement process discontinues, and again, in my case, there’s certailnly no exception. I’ve taken many births since I was cursed, but because of the mercy of the most merciful, munificent and magnanimous manifestion of Kṛṣṇa, often referred to as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, who’s accurately acclaimed as pattita-pavana (savior of the most fallen) this is the last “life,” my currently conditioned, suffering state of consciousness will remain pre-destined to be incarcerated in. His highly empowered servant, affectionatley and respectfully referred to as Srila Prabhupada has established an international religious organization called ISKCON, which attracted my attention and in which I’ve taken initiation. This is a synopsis of my sorry (his)story:

WHAT MOSES, CAIN, THE WANDERING JEW, THE TWO WITNESSES MENTIONED IN THE 11TH CHAPTER OF REVELATION, GAURANGA PREMA DASA A.K.A. GREGORY LEE REGOSIN, ADOLF HITLER AND ASVATTHAMA ALL HAVE IN COMMON:
